Shop & Pole Barn Concrete Floor Guide
A shop or pole barn floor should typically be 5 to 6 inches thick over a compacted base and vapor barrier, reinforced for the equipment that will actually be in the building, jointed on a planned grid, and troweled flat if you may coat it later.
Start with what goes in the building
The spec follows the use. A storage barn for lawn equipment is a different slab than a shop with a two-post lift, a loaded car trailer, or a tractor. Tell your contractor what will be in the building — including the things you're planning for later — before thickness is quoted.
Thickness and reinforcement
- 5" with reinforcement covers most shops and hobby buildings
- 6" with rebar for lifts, loaded trailers, and equipment traffic
- Thickened pads under lift posts and heavy point loads
- Reinforcement positioned within the slab, not lying on the base
Vapor barrier
If the building will ever be heated, finished, coated, or used to store anything moisture-sensitive, install a vapor barrier under the slab. It's inexpensive during construction and impossible to add afterward. Most failed epoxy floors we see are moisture problems, not coating problems.
Jointing and flatness
Joints go on a planned grid so cracking follows the cuts. Flatness matters more in shops than anywhere else — an out-of-plane floor makes lifts, cabinets, and rolling equipment a daily nuisance.
Finish and coatings
- Smooth power-trowel finish for shops and future coatings
- Broom or textured finish in wash-down and livestock areas
- Wait for the slab to cure and dry before coating
- Slope to drains where wash-down is planned

How thick should a pole barn floor be?
Five to six inches with appropriate reinforcement suits most buildings, with thickened pads under concentrated loads.
Do I need in-floor heat provisions?
Only if you plan to heat the floor — but if there's any chance of it, tubing and insulation must be planned before the pour.
Can you pour inside an existing building?
Often yes, depending on door access, headroom, and whether equipment or a pump can reach the pour. We evaluate access on site.
