Concrete Driveway Thickness: What Indiana Homeowners Should Know

Four inches over a compacted base is standard for passenger vehicles. Five to six inches with heavier reinforcement is the right call where work trucks, RVs, trailers, or frequent delivery traffic are involved. Thickness alone, however, cannot compensate for a poor base.

Matching thickness to real use

  • 4": cars, SUVs, ordinary residential traffic
  • 5": mixed use, occasional heavy vehicles, wider approach areas
  • 6"+ with rebar: RVs, loaded trailers, work trucks, equipment, frequent deliveries
  • Thickened edges and pads where wheels concentrate load

Why the base matters more than the extra inch

Concrete is strong in compression and weak in tension. A slab spanning a soft or uneven base bends, and that's where cracks start. Adding an inch of concrete over an uncompacted base is a worse investment than spending the same money on stone, grading, and compaction.

Reinforcement

Mesh helps hold shrinkage cracks tight; rebar on a planned grid adds meaningful capacity for heavier loads. What matters as much as the choice is placement — reinforcement has to sit in the correct position within the slab, not lie on the ground under it.

Control joints

Joints should be cut roughly two to three times the slab thickness in feet — a 4-inch slab is typically jointed around every 8 to 10 feet — and cut to about a quarter of the slab depth. Correct joint layout is how you get straight, planned cracking instead of random cracking.

Is a 4-inch driveway enough for a truck?

For an occasional pickup, generally yes over a good base. For a work truck used daily, a loaded trailer, or an RV, we recommend 5 to 6 inches with rebar.

Does thicker concrete prevent cracking?

No. Correct base, reinforcement, and joint spacing prevent problem cracking. Thickness addresses load capacity.

How thick should the stone base be?

It depends on soil conditions, which vary widely across Central Indiana's clay soils. We evaluate the subgrade on site rather than applying a fixed number.
